Hi everybody,
Referring to this book the word fellowship in itself means a society of people sharing mutual interests, experiences, activities, etc.
This book clearly shows that followers were the members without particular power, without positions of authority, or special influence.
Nowadays this perception is becoming fade because organization and leaders themselves are realizing that success is based on a good plan, good people, proper support and the most important good communication.
I would emphasize that followers are creating change because leaders are understanding more and more that if all these elements are in place than the possibility to realize success is in their hands.

For a good book on the art of dynamic, helpful and interactive followership try Ira Chaleff's The Courageous Follower: Standing Up To and Four Our Leaders. Like you, he realizes that effective leaders more and more must depend on the skills and specific experience of followers within an organization. It is important for leaders and followers to remember that they both follow the same mission or overarching objectives.
