The Flight of the Creative Class: The New Global Competition for Talent
If the city exists based on the Rule of three Ts: “technology, talent and tolerance”, then it more likely will attract creative class of people.
Based on the book of Richard Florida there are 13 million of creative persons in Russia, mainly concentrated in the two biggest cities: Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Like in the most of the other countries, people from all over Russia dream to move there and make their carrier in the biggest cities with better opportunity to grow. We say “Moscow is for All” but we also say that “Moscow is another country inside Russia”. Some of these people would return back to their small cities, some will stay but their place always will be among working class, and very little of them will be able to become part of creative class; those are talented people with innovative ideas who will create and produce something new, that has never been done before.
Though the main problem of creative class in Russia is that our government does not value our creative class as it is, for instance, in USA or Europe, so we suffer from brain drain. Our best and talented people leave to the places abroad where they could be paid more and their researches could be sponsored better, in better conditions, etc.
But improvements are on the way: Skolkovo (http://www.skolkovo.ru/), the construction of Russian Silicon Valley has been started in 2010 (better later than never). It will be an international innovative school, which will help to the talented people to become successful: to develop themselves, our country and the world.
I believe it is a good beginning and therefore in the nearest future Russia will be able to become one of the most attractive places for creative class and take its own niche in the global competition of the talents and places, as we already have at least 13 million of creative individuals, we just need to provide them with relevant conditions, taking into consideration foreign experiences.
Sincerely,
Tatiana
Hi Tania,
ReplyDeleteI share your thoughts because it is not different in Turkey. Istanbul is heart of Turkey and after university, people do not turn their cities (like me)because of opportunities and career plan. Alot of creative people start to live there and then if they can not improve theirself, they move to other developed countries.
In my previous company, we had product development department but sometimes later they abolish this department due to financial reasons. Because everyone was engineer and they were good at their job. For that reason department had high cost. There is really limited opportunity for them in Turkey. Also it seems, the support from goverment is limited.
Also I want to mention one more thing. For example our actress... If they educated in any school or have taken any small role in any movies in America, it effect their career positively. We start to see them "wow! what a perfect man/woman". It is same for academicians, bussiness men...
İstanbul is heart of Turkey, Moscow is heart of Russia, Tirana is heart of Albania... USA is heart of world.
Thank you Burcin,
ReplyDeleteMaybe China is the heart of the world :D
