The Irresistable Pull of Irrational Behavior

Ori Brafman and Ron Brafman

Broadway 2008

Why do perfectly rational people make irrational decisions? Why normal people in an unusual situation behave in an extraordinary way? Why we act by instinct in a particular situation after which and in a normal situation will never repeat the same action?

Sometimes what we think we know to be true isn't and what we know to be untrue is.

Like for the fest season of December of each year in Albania general the prices for food goods are up than normal since the beginning of the month and higher at the end of it. So normally the people should buy less but the opposite happens.

For examples: It makes less sense that when egg prices drop a little, people buy more of them than they perhaps can eat, but when they rise by the same amount, people cut back on their consumption by two and a half times.

Somehow not usual situations make us act irrationally, setting the stage for potentially explosive situations.

  1. Irrational is part of who we are and whoever is a leader should be able to understand that. Its the key to our control.........

  2. Hi Idi and Rezart,
Let me add some words to this discussion. Our rational part helps us live a normal life and most of the time, but our irrational part is what makes us human. Our emotions, love, our patriotic feelings, to be able to sacrifice or give for greater causes are all irrational in a way, but they are so human...
