Positive Deviance

The idea of PD is very close to my understanding if I can put it this way.The combination of these two words can seem contradictory( positive and deviance)because deviance is something that is not within moral or social standards but when it is positive it should be understood,to my mind,as doing good things using different from others approaches(not necessarily unsocial or immoral).
It was the book I was interested in not because it was an attractive piece of literature but because I appreciate people who speak about practices more than theories( not what can be done but what has been done). It is a big deal if you help change only one person let alone hundreds of people they helped. What impressed me was their living together with the people who had a problem( even for some time) and finding out what you can do without waiting for help from the government or other countries. It is always easy to say(e.g. in Vietnam) :"If we had better food, better conditions or money our children would not suffer from malnutrition". So why wait?
It is a common practice in society to wait for "experts" or scientists to tell us what is "better" to do.When people among ordinaries are making really fruitful and successful steps we don't pay much attention. How can they know?Sometimes even children have such solutions to the tough problems that we can't imagine. For example, to be able to understand the problem of a child you have TO BEND DOWN.For some people it is difficult(it needs effort),but this is the way.Sometimes it is not simple to find solution through PD,that's why not many try.So, I can't agree with the statement from the book that "it is easier to act your way into a new way of thinking than to think your way into a new way of acting".At most times it is hard for an individual or an organization to overcome accepted rules or ways of behavior and start acting differently even for the sake of greater aim.So, it is better and more rational way but not easy.
As a conclusion I want to remind you one saying: If you think you can't do it DO NOT interrupt those who are doing it.

  1. I am agree with Olga says that:At most times it is hard for an individual or an organization to overcome accepted rules or ways of behavior and start acting differently even for the sake of greater aim.
Last year my company was bought from a Deutsch Company and for this reason it is needed to overcome accepted rules or ways of behavior and start acting differently even for the sake of greater aim.

  2. Hi,

There are two types of people who will tell you that you cannot make a difference in this world: Those who are afraid to try themselves, and those who are afraid that you will succeed. What we said in “How to change the world” book was that one don’t have to be powerful to alter the current reality. The most important thing is to find the power of this positive deviance and act forward.
