Immunity to change


     When you say the word CHANGE it gives many people the creeps. It is like destroying earthquake or a hurricane which devastates everything around when you don’t realize why these disasters are happening and what is their purpose. It is FRIGHTENING, UNKNOWN, UNNECESSARY.
     Why should I change anything if I am comfortable this way? I have a family, money, fame. I can satisfy all my carnal desires…
     Change in a state (communistic understanding) or an organization means losing the ideology of certain people, the way that was chosen for the convenience of some members. CHANGE allows people to be creative, innovative, free. And this is dangerous. So, that is why many companies have immunity to change. It is easier to keep your employees in line when everything is as it is. This is one aspect why immunity to change is formed.
     Another aspect is mind-sets ( as mentioned in the book). I call it laziness. People are reluctant to change because it needs hard work even though they know it is good. We can compare some organizations with heavy smokers. They don’t give up smoking not because they can’t but because it needs effort and fulfilling the time of smoking with a different activity.
     So, to sum it up I think that two things prevent you from change: fear and laziness.

    I totally agree with your idea. People are afraid to change because of fear and mind-set. They prefer to leave in certain condition; even these are not the best ones, than change the way of life.

  2. As you said there are some undercover issues here. Fear is something we don't want to pronouns out loud. But mostly I like the part about change in a state or organization. What happens if a leader starts a change but he falls behind and his employees or followers think he is not good enough any more to lead them. Secondly we like one thing in our hand now more than two in the future. It's comfortable and we feel secure. Future and change bring uncertainty and it disturbs us. We like our habits because they are built in long terms and they are ours.

  3. Dear Olga,
    I agree with you telling that people fear changes. Me, myself, as an individual like changing different things around me, I mean small changes, just for life not being monotone. But when it comes to more important changes as for example changing the job I find it difficult, I fear the other environment I will face in the other job. There must be a good motivator for me to face this change. I think as you say “Why should I change if I am comfortable this way? The same happens with organizations, they fear to introduce a new product, promote and give to the market because they fear it will not go as they want, so they better stay with the old products whose market is well known.
