“Followership”: How Followers Are Creating Change and Changing Leaders

The perception of Leaders in the postmodern societies has changed significantly, as well as the relationship between leaders and followers. Along the history the term leader has been linked to a position of authority or ownership while in the new era self determination is a concept of the past. New organizational matrices structures and more autonomous structures have changing the nature of the followers with more responsibility and power. They are less likely to remain silent, less bold but more strategic.

This remainded me that nowadays, nobody is placed in a leadership role automatically. Being a leader and a follower myself, I really understand what it means to be a leader most of the time and a follower some of the time, or either the opposite. Achieving a symbiotic relationship is the new focus.  That’s why Kellerman explores a new view : Who leads whom?

  1. Dear Nicoleta,

to lead is to have followers, and following is always a voluntary activity.

So, in a leader perspective you have to have to win the trust of the followers in order to build a solid moral and ethical foundation.
But as we see each day in the reality life (I’m referring now to our leadership in Albania) i'm afraid that the new focus (symbiotic relationship) has change to something pervert and diabolic in function of a small gr.

The leader gives direction to what is right and needs to be done in order to provide the right impulses for all to move forward.

but as we see the impulse we receive is to move backwards.

  2. Dear Nicoleta,
I also think that only on your case could understand the relation between leader and follower depending on your character and your elect and the person who you are, but all the other that are leading us I guess that are the opposite of what you mention because they want to achieve their objectives without considering that we are human and we are just those employees that we make possible achieving those objectives but they treat us as we are animal ....... (I am referring especially to SME )

  3. As you said if they give employees more responsibilities, they will achieve more because they will think it is also theirs not only the leader's. But not more responsibilities to put the blame on them but let them be themselves and find new ways to do things.

  4. I think that leadres would succed more if they will let sometimes some resposibilities to the followers. To have that simbiotic relationship betten them you have to make think to the followers that are very important in the process.A good leader is not the one who is distinguished because he let him followers behind him , the good one is who is distinguished walking with them.

  5. Dear All,

I think that giving the leaders and the followers the same responsibilities it not that good. In this case that should have the same name and there should not be any difference between them. We all are aware of the importance of the leaders and at the same time that of the followers now-days. They are both important separately, and they are great when they come unified together. Prof. Barbara has emphasized and innovated is the way we establish communication between both parties.
