Library is a sacred place for many Russians as it was for me. I spent a lot of time of my school and university life in libraries believing that it is the most important source of knowledge. Sometimes I was waiting for two weeks to take a certain valuable book because there was a queue for it. Sounds unbelievable, doesn’t it? Now days paper books become less and less usable especially among youngsters. You can consider me as an old-fashioned lady but my books are my treasure. They are kinds of pets. I buy what I am interested in, what I love and then read them carefully. It doesn’t mean I don’t read anything from Internet but what I read is articles, reviews or expert opinions but not books(except our course books of course). I could never imagine that Groundswell would be of my interest. But what I learnt from this book made me think about changing world of technology. You accept it or it will work against you. “It is like a flood that can’t be stopped….And while you can’t stop it, you can understand it. You can not only live with it; you can thrive in it. That’s the point of this book.” The fact that everything is free is promising and frightening at the same time. On one hand, customers have a chance to share their opinions about goods or services of the companies, but on the other hand, many companies can go bankrupt because there will be no need of them. It is good for me since I am a customer, my life is becoming easier from many points of view. I am becoming a follower in whose hands there is a certain part of power. Li and Bernoff state: ”Your brand is whatever your customers say it is” It is a very good motto for the companies which trust themselves more than their clients. It will make them wake up and think about their strategies and approaches more carefully.
Hi Olga
ReplyDeleteyou have good ideas but you are not an old fashioned lady. you are a little bit romantic. During my studies I spent a lot of time in library too. I think I wasted my time. I cant believe how much technology has enabled facilitates our life. I reach everything I want to find through a small screen. One day the libraries in our homes will be part of history. The books will be read online by the internet.
Hi Olga,
ReplyDeleteAs a Russian from one side and victim of groundswell technologies on another side I agree and disagree with you at the same time. I also was grown up with the same idea of the importance of the books but at the same time technologies do their business, step by step they force out paper books. I started to use electronic books since it much easier to find them, I do not want waste my time for looking a necessary book in the different shops and wait so long to get the book since I can find anything in internet for a couple of minutes. So I just gave up and took an Ebook Reader. Now I never “run out” of books and always can keep this device nearby. The same advice to you ;-)
Sincerely,
Tatiana
Hi Olga,
ReplyDeleteI am agree with Tatiana, adn i would like to add something regarding eBook readers. One device holds about a library and gives you as many of your favorite book titles at your fingertips as you could ever really want. Plus, they make it easy to take notes, save clippings of quotations and highlight passages we want to be able to find again. eBook readers are about readability. They are designed to make your reading experience more enjoyable and less of a hassle. Nobody wants to take a stack of books with them on a business trip or long road trip. They’re convenient, portable and good for the environment. In fact, the only real downside we can see to an electronic book over a real paper book is that you’ll have a few more problems if you accidentally spill your coffee on it or get splashed at the pool.
eBook readers take it one step further.
Dear Olga,
ReplyDeleteI believe that no technology innovation in the world can replace the books. Reading a book (hard copy) is quite different from reading a book in the internet. Technology has improved the way to reach information, for e.x in a cheapest way, whenever you want etc. but it will never substitute books.
