BOOK.4. GROUNDSWELL,Winning in a world transformed by social technologies

Technology and internet has changed our lives. We rely on technology for every day things.

Checking the weather so we can pick the clothes to wear, checking the maps to find a location of a shop, reading the newspaper, learning, search for telephone numbers,  taxi, businesses, friends, search a cooking recipe, checking our e-mail, checking our agenda or synchronizing our agenda with friends, family work peers etc.

Spreading the news, spreading the gossip it all happens fast on the internet and is facilitated by social network sites. In just few seconds the same news, songs…are spread to the whole planet.

We all use internet tools like skype , facebook , gmail, gtalk etc to cover our needs for communication with friends, family, classmates, colleagues and even customers.
Technology and internet have really changed the way we do things; it all seems faster, very simple and convenient. We can do almost everything from our office, home and sofa without moving a bit.
And if we need to move…mobile internet is there for our service. Many of us are found of Iphone and other smartphone devices that allow us to be online connected 24/7 wherever we are.

All of these changes have brought mobile phones and notebooks in the centre of our attention. We all confess that it has become a habit to look at our mobile devices several times per day, checking our inbox or facebook. The notebook screens and phone screens have taken all our attention. We rely in those devices for day to day activities and feel lost without them.

And of course this is something that business and corporations realize more and more. Many of them use the same tool and social networks but for a different aim, to get our attention to their product and services. And they adapt to this with new communication and brand management techniques, even their products adapt ebanking, ecommerce, mobile payment, mobile banking etc.

With internet services and tools it seems that the planet becomes smaller and closer to us.

  1. Dear Nikoleta,
Your excitement about growing technology is impressive. If technology and telecommunication help people find each other, hear each other and understand better I agree that it’s great progress. But if these innovations make us lazy, indifferent and further from each other it is another topic. I don’t think it’s good by all means. I will tell you one story of a very busy man. As far as I know it’s a true story.
There was a middle-aged man who wanted to send flowers to his mother on Mother’s Day. He wanted to order them by phone. He got into his expensive car and drove to his office. On the way he saw a girl sitting by the road crying. He stopped and asked what the problem was. The girl told that she didn’t have enough money to buy flowers for her mum. The man consoled her and gave her money. Then he suggested he should have taken her to her mother. The girl agreed. The man couldn’t express his feelings of astonishment and shame when they arrived at one graveyard. The girl rushed to her mother’s grave and put the flowers on it. The man immediately went to flower shop, bought flowers and went HIMSELF to a distant land to the closest person on earth.
Thus, with extreme speed of technology growing do not forget THE MOMENTS….

  2. This is a story that makes us understand that we are focusing in some things and forgetting the very beautiful moments with our family and friends.

  3. Rapid and very big changes in information technologies are making lots of facilities available for more people with cheaper prices day by day. This is something very good for human beings but only one side of madelian which is seen by majority of people. The other side is the problems those come together with these new technologies such as spending too much time on computer so having less social relations, living in a world different to the real one and more importantly putting your health under very big potential risks. What we should do is to use the new technologhy products when we really ned it in order to minimize their potential risks for us and also to have a more social relations and not to cut relations with the real world. In today's world, unfortunately a considerable number of people, especially young generation, don't care about the other side of medal and use new technology products carelessly. The bad outcomes of those unconcious have already started to appear but much bigger and larger problems will be unevitable in the future unless people learn how to use them correctly.
