Book.5. The Power of Positive Deviance

We need solution in every area of our lives and business either we owe everything or we have nothing.
It is necessary for us to know how from the difficulties to become stronger and more famous or popular than others.
In every field of life or work we face difficulties. These difficulties are closely related to solutions needed to be found for different situations and issues.
In fact the concept of "positive deviance" is nothing more or nothing less than Being the best among the others despite the lack of opportunities.

Being in the group of people that knows how to benefit and to be better than the others in these kind of situations means in simple words: "to be the Positive deviants".

Watching the news on TV I heard about the fact that in public schools one of the main problems is the usage of knifes or other kinds of weapons. These objects often brings out bloody quarrels and increase the fear among pupils. As parents need to find very secure places for their children they also think about choices for the schools they want their children to study and also to be safe.

As they do not have enough money to send them in private schools ,where the security is in higher levels (example of positive deviance) they try to find other public schools that have higher levels of security and also level of education (another example of positive deviances).

Being the Positive Devinat often is not  easy. You have to go through some difficulties to find the best solution and to achieve to be the best. It is a kind of competitive advantage that the business needs to find in order to survive or expand even in eras of crisis.

  2. Hi Ortenca,

It is really good example for positive deviance and I had same experience when I was in high school. My family sent me to private high school for to enable me to be safe. Of course education is one of the reasons for choosing schools but it was second for my family.

I'm sure in every countries we can see similar examples. Some schools are more safety than others or have higher success rate of students. As I mentioned in my post about positive deviance, people do not look around to see the positive deviants and they do not change their act or way.

I started with my colleges the MBA at another University in Tirana, but the study was in Albania with Albanian professors and in the course there was more than 100 students, and i can't be confort on this and i changed (only me)my study to our University and I am very satisfied with my University. This was a positive deviance.

  4. In my opinion, it isn't so difficult to create a positive deviance.Because, most of the people don't use their capacities at maximum levels unless they are obliged to do it. That is why, a person who has an IQ level little over the average and knows how and where to use his capacity, time and determines reachable objectives for him can create positive deviance easily especially in the countries where most of the people are lazy and indifferent for the opportunities around them.
The level of difficulty of creating positive deviance mostly depends on how you evaluate the events. If you approach them from a positive aspect,it means that you are one step ahead of the others who don't think on that way. After that,it comes to start the actions.Of course, I am not mentioning about some individuals who come to certain positions by usinf some unfair ways or by sometimes chance as they are exceptional cases.

  5. Dear Ortenca,
I agree with you saying that “It is a kind of competitive advantage that the business needs to find in order to survive or expand even in eras of crisis.” I think that the “positive deviance” theory is very useful not only to individuals but also to organizations. Finding an organization (positive deviant) that is doing well, succeeding in their work, and trying to use their way of operating in the market may help many business to survive or even improve their receivables.
