Book No.1. SWITCH

Book No.1. SWITCH

Everyday people wake up and start their lives; some working and struggling to be successful, some others trying to survive. In every moment people want everything and want it to be done “perfectly” even if the perfection is impossible to be achieved.
Everyday in the offices there are different faces watching each other. Some are supervisors and others are supervised.
Everyday the supervisors want more work done correctly and everyday supervised employees are not satisfied and motivated. The employees want work paid properly and also get satisfaction (according their expectations) meanwhile the employers want the achievement of the targets.
How must it be made avoiding discouraging and increasing the positive adrenaline in the veins of the employees?
Delegating all the time?
Mentioning only numbers and figures?
Giving more work to them?
Force the employees to make their work?
NO; none of the aforementioned ways is not the right. The company must find the way to make its employees feel part of it. They must understand the importance in achieving the company’s goals through achieving their own personal goals.
If a football player wants his team to win ,he first will try to accomplish his expectations to be the best or one of the best players of the championship; only through this the match may be winning and the team may succeed.

  1. Hi Ortenca,

The last things that you can motivate people is bonus wages or wage premium. It is needed to motivate people throw other things as: work environment, to promote them for achieving objectives etc.

  2. Hi Ortenca,

A common mistake made is the assumption that all that is needed to motivate employees is money, and in this point I agree with comment I read above.
In one manner all are characterized by the elephant because in the working environment some of us evaluate personal recognition, feeling as we are making a valuable contribution. Others might be interested in having their opinion heard, may want to have more input in the way things are being done, or might be motivated by getting a promotion. Others still might simply be motivated by more time off to spend with their families.
In this context if we can manage to merge the rational side of the rider and emotional side of the elephant, and them work together that the things can start change for better.

  3. Hi Ortenca&Leda,

I completely agree that "The company must find the way to make its employees feel part of it" and the way is of course motivation. There are some ways to motivate employees. About Leda's comment, it seems money is the last factor but I don't think because employees work in a someones' company to be able to continue their life or to improve life quality. We can not deny the importance of salary or bonus wages. I can accept money is not only one way but I think it is not the last important thing.

  4. Hi Ortenca and all, I also think that empowerment, delegation and a lot of other methods which do not involve money has limited impact on motivation of the employees. To be motivated by money should not be seen as being greedy, or shameful. This is normal, businesses are for profit, so if you want employees to serve for this cause, they should also benefit in a similar way from this profit.
    Wish all profitable work environments...

  5. Dear Ortenca,
We get the full answer of these questions of the first book, at the end of our course (after long discussions in class and in the blog), as better employee performance means profitability and success. So i am trying to say that the factors that influence the employees’ performance are numerous. It requires improvement on both sides- leaders and followers- it inquires leaders to make use obliquity (make the team succeed together), click among employees, be deviant where you have to (don't stick to the rules), make people believe in their capacities that they can contribute to the society even in the poor and undeveloped countries than to fly etc.
