Change can take many forms–cyclical and predictable, sudden and unpredictable, voluntary and involuntary, and so on. However, the evidence is that change is NEVER easy or automatic. In fact, it has been discovered that humans are highly resistant to change, even to change that is desired rather than required.
There is a psychology to this resistance. Three stages of increasing mental complexity have been identified in adults, and our capacity for change is determined by our mental capacity. But it IS possible to overcome resistance and to increase our mental capacity (ie move to a higher level of mental compelxity).
A clear example is Behavior and perceptions of Greek consumers before crisis and now day under crisis effect.
Overall, the Greeks enjoy life, this can be seen through their festivals and the closeness of the family, they do not knew to stop on their night life. In the beginning of the crisis it was very difficult for them to change their LifeStyle. And now day after a long time crisis they overcome the resistance and reduce in maximum the spending for nightlife and shopaholic.
Thank you
COnsidering all these explanations I would like to know according to you Elda, when people like the greeks mentioned in your example decide to change and how they understand the emergency of this change?
ReplyDeleteIn other words, people must always know that something wrong is going on in order to change? Can they not change without happening something extraordinary?

New things always give a feeling of fear to most people even when they believe in that there is a need to change it.Because of this fear (even when there is a desire to change),many people/company complete their lives without being aware of their real potentials/capacities.Meanwhile, some others, who have low potentials/capacities but have more brave to accept new things comparing to the first group,go ahead and generally become more successful in the life. The number of people in the first group is muc more than the others and this also enables them to be successful easily.
ReplyDeleteGreek people's case is another case.It is always easier to accept and pass from bad conditions to good ones but unacceptable and difficult from good conditions to bad ones.I think this explanation fits to Greek people's behaviour changes recently.
Hi Elda,
ReplyDeleteIt this case, to understand this behavior, a good beginning might be to start seeing things from their perspective.Things that are learned early in life are the hardest to change or unlearn. Early conceptions of the world, even if lost to consciousness, remain a part of our memory and may influence our behaviors in some very interesting ways.
