Book No.1. SWITCH Everyday people wake up and start their lives; some working and struggling to be successful, some others trying to survive. In every moment people want everything and want it to be done “perfectly” even if the perfection is impossible to be achieved. Everyday in the offices there are different faces watching each other. Some are supervisors and others are supervised. Everyday the supervisors want more work done correctly and everyday supervised employees are not satisfied and motivated. The employees want work paid properly and also get satisfaction (according their expectations) meanwhile the employers want the achievement of the targets. How must it be made avoiding discouraging and increasing the positive adrenaline in the veins of the employees? Delegating all the time? Mentioning only numbers and figures? Giving more work to them? Force the employees to make their work? NO; none of the aforementioned ways is not the right. The company must find the way to make its employees feel part of it. They must understand the importance in achieving the company’s goals through achieving their own personal goals. If a football player wants his team to win ,he first will try to accomplish his expectations to be the best or one of the best players of the championship; only through this the match may be winning and the team may succeed.
My first impression to the lesson was: wow this is great. I am a mathematics graduate and it seems that this kind of lesson was different and I was not used to, but I loved it and I wish I will not miss any lessons. I was the type of “ fixed mind” person, my choices were 1 and 3. It was totally true I really am that type of person, I can do things differently, I like to change things time after time but in my mind the bases and the most important part is hard to be changed. During the lesson we talked about “decision paralysis”, and such a thing happened to me lastly. It is not the husband case because I solved this problem early, undergraduation period, and this is because I listen to much to “my elephant” :). Coming to my case: I went to have a look at the new collections of wedding dresses, the catalogues had arrived but the dresses not yet. Before going to the shop, I had an idea in my mind and I was going to look at that model, but the seller there showed me 5 new catalogues and they were full of new models. I was there for 2 hours looking at them and at the end my mind was so confused, I was like lost, changed my initial idea, and in fact I felt like sick, overloaded. So I went out and told the sellers there, please next time don’t show me so much choices because I cannot get out of, it is so difficult to choose one. They gave me a solution, you can take more than one, take three and it will be ok they said, seller’s solution Another “subtopic” that I would like to mention is the story of “chocolates and radishes”, I thought that it may be some like equivalent to the case of wages / salaries of people in a company. I think that in a company one of the most important components that make a company successful is its labor. In order that people work harder their boss should apply bonus wages or wage premium to their employees, or may be different ideas that can make employees’ “elephants” happy, for ex. a vacation, trip. In this way, he can be happy himself since he will get better results at his company. It seems that this became a “point the destination” example, but in my opinion, I think that “motivating the elephant”, making it happy, is the key to change the behavior and reach the success.
The last things that you can motivate people is bonus wages or wage premium. It is needed to motivate people throw other things as: work environment, to promote them for achieving objectives etc.
The lesson of yesterday evening was just the opposite of a job in an organization where achieving the target is the most important issue and nothing else count. This mean that sometimes the supervisors react in a very negative way in confront of their staff, forgetting so that the human resources are the biggest asset that the organization have. It is very difficult for some of them telling to their direct staff that you have performed very well this duties or, well done for the achievement of this month. In fact they prefere to yell and deny everything their subordinates have done during all the time. I don`t understand why they think that with this attitude the staff will be more motivated. It is the opposite, because the work environment is unsupportable and they are not willing to go to their job. It is a real challenge to let know to this kind of bosses that emotional goals lead to a greater success as compared to S.M.A.R.T ones and also that the employees tend to be elephant so they are motivated if they here good things and they will perform better.
I think that this lesson is very useful for us, to know how we would be much better than we are, so the phrase that human are like writers & elephant seems so logical to understand the behavior of different people in our places of work or in our daily life, but I think also that is so hard to change or to apply this phrase in real market because no one lets the elephant to grow up in healthy way to bring us only benefits.
Hi Everybody, I would like to mention the story of Milk. In order to ride the elephant it is needed A concrete picture to show them the way how to switch however it is hard, even in the case of Milk (if you drink one glass of Raw milk it is equal to 5 slices of bacon). The same thing can work in the company using Performance appraisal. Performance is a function of the results, or what an employee accomplishes, and the Results are identified & measured by objectives (e.g. financial KPI’s, operational KPI’s, etc.). The overall approach in the company must be the demonstration of the appropriate behaviors of the employees and to allow the individual and the manager to reflect in the areas that the individual might need development in order to meet his/hers and the company’s goals. Thank you, With best regards Elda
I was trying to write a comment regarding the idea of Glenda but I couldn’t comment because I had not any rights to write on her profile, so I am writing here. In fact I agree with your opinion about the supervisors and i may add that especially in small countries like ours is very common to have supervisors that try to call themselves as RIDERS but in fact they are giant ELEPHANTS that have only one objective: TO INCREASE THEIR BENEFITS EVEN IF THEY ABUSE WITH THEIR EMPLOYEES which in fact are a powerful "weapon" for the development or the failure of a company.
Both of you are right. You are completing the elements of one subject very well. Sales premium, bonus and similar additional financial benefits are very important tools to movivate people but they aren't enough themselves especially in the long term.Working in a nice office with positive&harmonious people, being appreciated by superiors ,having chances for improving your professional knowledge and thus career development opportunities are also very crucial factors to make the staff happy &productive and thus to keep them in company for a long time.
(Referring to the comments of Turan,Elda and Erisa)Personally I think that is very important to maintain the balances between ELEPHANT and RIDER through designing the appropriate path to follow either materialistic or spiritualistic.
As it was citated in the book:
. . . the core of the matter is always about changing the behavior of people, and behavior change happens in highly successful situations mostly by speaking to people's feelings. This is true even in organizations that are very focused on analysis and quantitative measurement, even among people who think of themselves as smart in an MBA sense. In highly successful change efforts, people find ways to help others see the problems or solutions in ways that influence emotions, not just thought...
I would like to add, what we achieved from this pressure that the supervisors had over their subordinates: CRISES :). I think we should firstly know where we are headed and than find the appropriate way to achieve it.
Hello everybody. By mistake I wrotte elswere on first time however it does not matter now. My opinion is that the better someone can undestand the conection and the strength of the duality elephant/rider the better are the chances that that someone has to improve his life. I guess the majority of the people are guided by the "elephant" and I belive that this would be the right scenario. Those that are guided by the Rider theoratically should be well educated as only by education and self control the rider can be listened. To conlude what i think is : A lider ( director/manager ) should be able to distinguish the requests of the rider from those of the elephant and act acordigly. Regards everybody.
Life is all about choices, and of course choices means a lot of alternatives. Generally, i thing that the proportion scale between listening to the elephant or the rider should be equal or it can vary in small margins.
However i think that every time that we make a certain decision, first we listen to the rider but i personally never take that decision without CONSULTING to the elephant. The elephant is part of being a human being, is part of having desires and wishes, it is about making proper and in proper decisions, is about daring and perceiving, it has born with us. Before being directors, managers or supervisors we are first humans. So, we can never escape from the elephant, it is and it will be always there, as present as the rider. Maybe, we can be lead by the rider, and maybe it can result in very positive results. But when it comes to negative results we always find our self and strength to move on and to achieve the desired results, to the elephant. They are both very important separately, but we can better succeed and excel when they are managed properly together.
There is nothing wrong and to be afraid of from the elephant. we have to make the elephant that we have in move in accordance with the rider (not expel it)and motivate the elephants of our subordinates. I think that we should be afraid when we see our self lead ONLY by the rider...
In continuance of the Jerina's opinion I should say that it is the right solution to move in accordiance between Elephant and Rider. However,I should emphasize that a lot of people encounter many problems when they take an important decision. But mostly these problems has to do with many factors, such as: life style, education, experience, culture, tradition, etc... The important point for human being is to take decisions after a careful evaluation, which means the Elephant should consult to the rider. What I am trying to say is that Elephant is more important that rider, but to avoid misunderstanding I have to add that the Elephant never can do without rider. So the perfect accordance is always needed.
I think it is of crucioal importance that a person is capable of noticing the difference between a rider and an elephant. It is important because in my opinion this understanding is the key to a lot of human behaviors and a lot of action-reaction phenomenons. The elephant is part of the humans nature and as such it has to be the strongest of the duality but it is the riders part that makes the divison between what is an evolved human being or not. Bye
I agre with Ortenca about that the important thing is to provide the balances between ELEPHANT and RIDER. To be able to provide this balance, we have to aware of the ability, personality, social and economic position of the elephant. Elephant can be educated or not, can be rich or poor etc. but everybody has some motivated elements. According to our smart goals, if we can find the correct element at the correct time, we can manage elephant by motivated.
But I think we have to also aware of 2 things. First of them is elephants will continue to want more than previous time so we have to now the boundaries. The second point is in our personal life or professional life, we all are elephant and rider. We can manage somebody but at the same time another one is managing us…
A common mistake made is the assumption that all that is needed to motivate employees is money, and in this point I don’t agree with some comments I read above. In one manner all are characterized by the elephant because in the working environment some of us evaluate personal recognition, feeling as we are making a valuable contribution. Others might be interested in having their opinion heard, may want to have more input in the way things are being done, or might be motivated by getting a promotion. Others still might simply be motivated by more time off to spend with their families. In this context if we can manage to merge the rational side of the rider and emotional side of the elephant, and them work together that the things can start change for better.
Taking into consideration all the above comments I completely agree with the comments about balance between the elephant and rider (Ortenca, Nihal, Burcin, Blerina, Idi) – there shall be absolute collaboration between those both otherwise they will be lost and the goal will never be reached. Even it may happen so that elephant will start to move in the counter direction. To not come to this point it is very important for the rider to motivate the elephant. I think not only above mentioned benefits (higher salaries, promotions, extra holidays, etc.), understanding and balance are important but it is absolutely necessary for the rational rider (supervisor, manager) to interest the emotional elephant, to give him that feeling that he is very significant and unchangeable for reaching this certain goal. The elephant will be happy and will go easy to the aim and for the rider it will be no difficulties to lead such elephant.

Regarding Blerina's comment I can't but agree with you that money can be the only or predominant factor to motivate the employee.Job satisfaction for many and for me as well doesn't consist of what i have in my pocket or my title. It is more,as you mentioned, about personal identity(if you are heard, if your innovative ideas are taken into consideration). In my opinion if your ID is not lost and you realize that you really contribute in the organization you work for there will not be a war between "a rider and an elephant". They will be on the same frequency wave. Once in my childhood i read on a paper of chewing gum:"Love is looking the same direction".I think to reach this synergy "a rider and an elephant" must look the same direction.
Regarding Erkan's comment If i understood you right i agree that servant style of leadership can sometimes make you faster reach your goals. You serve people for the sake of survival and prosperity of your company. You see the final destination and you know that by having contact and understanding with your"elephant" you can make him go with the speed you want and the way you want.As one of my friends says,"When I praise my son while he is helping me it seems he is ready to do the world for me."Thus as I mentioned in my comment on the book "Switch" you must sometimes make your "elephant" feel that s(he) is "the boss" to reach your aims.
It was a very nice lesson for me. If we can say “No” to the requests of the “big elephant inside us”, it means we have succeed a lot of things. However, I believe most of us have difficulties. I look at my life and realize that to change something is too difficult.
When we undertake big decisions, we have to think about the results. Most of people care too much about the “voice of their big elephants”. For example, I have met my husband 7 years ago. He is Albanian. At that time I listened at the “voice of my elephant” and decided to marry with him. I closed my ears toward all voices around me. Now I am experiencing a new life, I must live in Albania. This was my preference but every day I ask my elephant ‘‘why I'm here?'' but I don't have any answer yet. I don't understand why we like choosing voice of our hearts. Why it is easier than the other logical ways?!
It seems like using alcohol and cigar in a time you know it is harmful. We know but we don’t care, we do it anyway. Listening to your heart, no matter you know you will sadden! No matter where we go on the world we recognize these kinds of people. There are millions of people who follow what their feelings, not their minds, and they cannot reach to say “no” to his/her wish. I wish I listen less the voice of the “Elephant”. Because some time it may be too late to have a solution.
Regarding Glenda's comment: I am totally agree to you ... in Albania we have such common example and so on as we called boss!!! their reaction on that way is unjustifiable. They understand very well what's better and what's wrong for the employees and so on for the business but the fanatic way on leading made them those prototype.
Regarding Ortenca's comment: I am agree with you because unfortunately sometimes the boss of companies or institutions are not much better than us , I am referring to the knowledge and culture that they want to implement on us although are so far on our exception from them...
I do not agree totally with some ideas that motivation can be work conditions or similar kinds of things(Elda). Because nowadays I think work conditions should be taken as granted, a must that the companies have to provide for everybody. In addition, I think that individual motivation is more effective than group motivation. As Turan mentioned, in this point I agree with him, having chances for improving professional knowledge and thus career development opportunities could be a good motivation point.
I totally agree with my friends’ opinion related to keeping the balances between the elephant and the rider (Ortenca). Even if it is too hard to do, it is very good for the ones who can maintain the balances. This is a crucial point in achieving the goals, after achieving the balance everything is easier and almost done.

Regarding Glenda's comment:
ReplyDeleteI am totally agree to you ... in Albania we have such common example and so on as we called boss!!! their reaction on that way is unjustifiable. They understand very well what's better and what's wrong for the employees and so on for the business but the fanatic way on leading made them those prototype.
Regarding Ortenca's comment:
ReplyDeleteI am agree with you because unfortunately sometimes the boss of companies or institutions are not much better than us , I am referring to the knowledge and culture that they want to implement on us although are so far on our exception from them...
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with my friends’ opinion related to keeping the balances between the elephant and the rider (Ortenca). Even if it is too hard to do, it is very good for the ones who can maintain the balances. This is a crucial point in achieving the goals, after achieving the balance everything is easier and almost done.
